What "18K" means on plated jewellery
18K describes the purity of the gold layer, not the amount. An 18K gold plated piece has real 75%-pure gold on the surface, but the layer is 0.5–2.5 microns thick. So "18K gold plated" is an honest description of colour and purity, and says nothing about how long it lasts. Durability comes from two other things: the base metal and the protective coat.
