How to keep 18K gold plated, anti-tarnish jewellery looking new. ENSIA pieces are plated over stainless steel and sealed with a protective coat, so they handle real life — showers, sweat, the monsoon commute. A few habits still make the difference between a piece that looks new for a year and one that looks new for several.
What your jewellery can handle
- Showers, rain, sweat, hand-washing, sanitiser: fine. The stainless steel base doesn't oxidise and the coat protects the gold.
- Sleeping in studs and huggies: fine. Take off drops and bracelets — they bend and catch.
- Chlorinated pools and the sea: take it off. Chlorine and salt attack the gold layer itself. If you forget, rinse in fresh water and dry.
- Perfume, hairspray, lotion: put jewellery on after these, never before.
The daily routine (30 seconds)
- Jewellery goes on last, after perfume and lotion.
- After wear, wipe each piece with a soft dry cloth to remove sweat and oils.
- Store pieces separately — in the ENSIA pouch or a box with dividers — so metal doesn't scratch metal.
Cleaning
A soft cloth is enough for almost everything. If a piece needs more, use a drop of mild soap in warm water, a soft brush around stones, rinse, and dry completely. Never use toothpaste, baking soda, silver dip or jewellery-cleaning solutions meant for solid gold — they strip plating.
Rings and cuffs
Adjustable rings and open cuffs are sized with a gentle squeeze on a flat surface. Adjust in small steps and only a few times over the life of the piece; once it fits, leave it. Don't grip the decorative front while adjusting.
Pearls, crystals and enamel
Stones are set, not glued, but the pearl coating and enamel are softer than the metal. Keep these pieces away from anything with hard edges in storage, and off before swimming.
Monsoon
Humidity keeps a film of moisture on metal all night. Wipe pieces every evening, keep the box closed with a silica sachet, and dry anything that gets rained on the same day. Our monsoon care guide has the full routine.
What to expect, honestly
No plated jewellery lasts forever. A well-cared-for ENSIA piece should give one to two years of daily wear before the finish shows age, and much longer for occasional wear.
