Hoop Earrings Size Guide: 15 mm to 60 mm, What Each Size Says and Which Suits Your Face
Hoop sizes are listed in millimetres on almost every product page and almost nobody has a feel for what 25 mm looks like on an ear. This guide fixes that. Sizes below are the outer diameter of the hoop — the number you will see on ENSIA product pages and most others.
- Huggies (10–15 mm) hug the lobe; you can sleep in them.
- Small hoops (16–25 mm) are the everyday size that suits almost everyone.
- Medium (26–40 mm) shows with hair down and works for evenings.
- Statement (41 mm+) needs hair up and a plain neckline.
- Round faces suit oval or elongated hoops; long faces suit round, wider hoops.

Huggies: 10–15 mm
A huggie sits so close to the lobe that it barely swings. It is the hoop you never take off — shower, gym, sleep — and the one to buy for a second or third piercing. Because they are small, texture matters: a plain 12 mm huggie disappears; a beaded or crystal-set one reads as a detail.
Small: 16–25 mm
If you own one pair of hoops, this is the size. It shows with hair down, doesn't catch on collars, and is light enough for a full working day. Most of ENSIA's hoop collection lives here — the Bambara classic and the Gold Bead hoop are both around 20–22 mm.
Medium: 26–40 mm
This is where hoops start to be noticed as a choice. They move, they catch light, and they pair with an updo or with hair down. A textured or chunky hoop in this range carries an outfit without any other jewellery. It is also the size most flattering for round faces, provided the hoop is slightly oval.
Statement: 41 mm and up
Big hoops are an occasion earring. They need hair off the face and a neckline without a necklace competing. Weight becomes the issue here — a solid 50 mm hoop pulls on the lobe by hour three. Look for hollow-formed hoops (ENSIA's larger hoops are) which look the same and weigh a third as much.
Face shape, honestly
The face-shape rules are less strict than magazines suggest, but two hold up. If your face is round, a slightly oval or elongated hoop adds length; a perfectly round medium hoop repeats the shape. If your face is long or narrow, a round hoop in the small-to-medium range adds width. Square and heart-shaped faces can wear almost anything; softer, rounder hoops balance a strong jaw.
Hair length changes everything
Short hair or hair up: any size shows, so smaller hoops look more deliberate. Shoulder-length hair down: 20–30 mm is the sweet spot — visible but not fighting the hair. Long hair down: go medium or larger, or the hoop disappears.
The closure matters more than you think
Hinged snap closures (the hoop clicks shut) are the most secure and the most comfortable. Endless hoops that push through the ear can loosen and fall out. Every ENSIA hoop is hinged.
