Ring Size Guide for India: Measure at Home in Two Minutes, and When to Skip It Entirely
Ring sizing is the reason most people don't buy rings online, and the reason most rings bought as gifts end up in a drawer. The measuring is easy. The hard part is knowing which finger, which time of day, and what to do about knuckles. Here is all of it.
- Indian sizes run 8–22; each size is roughly 0.8 mm of circumference.
- Measure in the evening, when fingers are largest, and on the hand you'll wear it on.
- If the knuckle is wider than the base, size for the knuckle.
- Adjustable open-band rings fit sizes 12–18 and remove the question — best for gifts.

Method 1: the paper strip
- Cut a strip of paper about 5 mm wide and 10 cm long.
- Wrap it around the base of the finger, snug but not tight.
- Mark where the end overlaps.
- Measure from the end to the mark in millimetres. That is your circumference; find it in the chart.
Do it three times and take the middle number. Paper stretches less than string, which is why we prefer it.
Method 2: a ring you already own
Place a ring that fits the same finger on a ruler and measure the inside diameter in millimetres. Match it in the chart. This is the most accurate method if you have a ring that fits well.
The mistakes that give a wrong size
- Measuring in the morning. Fingers are smallest first thing and largest in the evening or after a hot day. Measure in the evening.
- Measuring the wrong hand. The dominant hand is usually half a size larger.
- Ignoring the knuckle. If your knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of the finger, the ring has to pass over it. Size for the knuckle and accept a slightly loose fit at the base — or choose a wider band, which sits more securely.
- Wide bands. A band over 6 mm wide needs about half a size up; it covers more finger and feels tighter.
When to skip all of this
An adjustable ring has an open back: you slide it on and gently squeeze or open the band to fit. Most cover Indian sizes 12 to 18, which is the range almost every adult woman's ring and index fingers fall in. Adjust it once, on a flat surface, and it stays. For gifts this is the answer — there is nothing to guess.

Adjusting without damaging the plating
Press the two ends of the band towards each other slowly, on a flat surface, in small steps. Don't grip the decorative front. Two or three adjustments over the life of the ring is fine; adjusting daily will eventually stress the band. Once it fits, leave it. Our size guide has the bracelet and necklace charts too.
