Wedding Guest Jewellery That Doesn't Weigh a Kilo: Mehendi, Sangeet, Reception
The heavy traditional set has its place — usually on the bride. For everyone else, a wedding weekend is three or four events, a lot of dancing, and a bag that has to hold everything. Light, modern gold pieces that look right against Indian wear and survive a sangeet are what you actually need. Here is an event-by-event plan.
- Mehendi: small and colourful — hands are the focus.
- Sangeet: one statement earring, hollow-formed so it lasts the dancing.
- Reception: pearls or crystals, layered chains, a crystal cuff.
- Everything should be sweat-safe. Wedding halls are hot and you will dance.
Mehendi and haldi
The hands are the point, so keep the arms bare or nearly so — mehendi and a stack of bangles fight each other. Go small at the ears: a pair of Emerald Orbit mini hoops or a coloured crystal stud picks up the green and yellow of the day. A single fine chain, nothing at the wrist. If it is a haldi, wear nothing you would mind getting turmeric on — steel-based pieces wash clean; brass will stain.
Sangeet
This is the event for one statement earring and nothing that competes with it. The rules: hair up or back, a plain neckline, and an earring that is hollow-formed so it weighs a third of what it looks like — you will be wearing it for five hours and dancing for two. The Aurelio Swirl pearl studs or the Solara sun studs are big enough to carry a lehenga and light enough to forget. Skip the necklace; add a statement ring instead.
Reception
The most formal event, and the one where pearls and crystals belong. Two ways to go:
- Layered chains — a collarbone pendant with a longer chain beneath, like the Golden North Star layered set, with pearl studs at the ear.
- Crystal line — the Lustro crystal cuff, drop earrings with pearls, and nothing at the neck if the blouse is embroidered.
Whichever you choose, keep it to two areas of the body — ears and wrist, or ears and neck — not all three.
The wedding itself
Daytime and often long. Pearls read as appropriate without being heavy: the Pearl Bow Glow necklace with small pearl studs, or a single pearl pendant with pearl drop earrings. A slim cuff if the sleeves are short.
What survives a wedding
Halls are hot, you sweat, you dance, someone spills something. Three things matter: the base metal (stainless steel doesn't react to a night of sweat; brass will show it by morning), the closure (hinged hoops and push-back studs stay on; hooks fall out on a dance floor), and weight (anything over about 8 g per earring pulls by hour three). Every ENSIA statement earring is hollow-formed for that last reason.
Packing for the weekend
Four pieces cover all four events: one pair of statement studs, one pair of pearl studs, one pendant necklace, one cuff. Put each in its pouch; a crystal cuff loose in a bag with a chain will scratch both. Add a soft cloth for the evening wipe — see our humid-weather routine if the wedding is in season.
